Water distribution in Luanda cost 35 million kwanzas between April and May

The authorities spent close to 35 million kwanzas, between April and May, to distribute 119 million liters of water to citizens in Luanda without access to the public network, due to covid-19, said an official source.

The indirect costs with logistics and acquisition of biosafety material for this process in the capital were around 62 million kwanzas.

The situation was under analysis, during the third ordinary session of the National Water Council (CNA) of Angola, which took place in Luanda, under the chairmanship of the vice-president, Bornito de Sousa.

In a press release, the CNA reported that the remaining provinces absorbed 134,600 cubic meters of water in that period, totaling a cost of about 23.4 million kwanzas.

During the months of April and May, the cost of water distributed free of charge, says the National Water Council was a total of 264,867.79 liters with direct costs of 45 million kwanzas.

Every day, citizens in Luanda and other parts of the country complain about the lack of drinking water to regulate hygiene in times of the pandemic.

A proposal to set up regional offices in priority river basins, namely Catumbela, Cavaco and Caporolo, Cuanza, Queve and Longa and Zambeze were also analyzed in this session.

"It is intended, with this proposal, to make a phased implementation of future regional watershed management offices, with the nature of local executive services of the National Institute of Water Resources (INRH), aiming at a closer and operational management of water resources at regional level ", the statement reads.

These measures, which, according to the authorities, have been established in the National Water Plan, translate into "the strengthening of water supply systems, construction of dams for multiple purposes, as well as the assurance of flow flows and use of groundwater" .

The CNA was also informed about structural projects to combat drought in the Cunene and Cuvelai Basins, following the President's Order, João Lourenço, of April 2019, which determines the "identification and implementation of structural solutions for the southern region" .

The work carried out by the transboundary basin commissions, namely the Permanent Cuban / Okavango River Basin Water Commission between Angola, Namibia and Botswana (OKACOM), the International Cuvelai River Basin Commission between Angola and Namibia, Permanent Joint Technical Commission Angola / Namibia for the Cunene River Basin, among others, was also under consideration at the meeting.

José Gomes de Andrade Ambriz was presented, at the time, as permanent secretary of the National Water Council.

The National Water Council is a permanent consultative body of the holder of the Angolan executive power for the coordination and articulation between different sectors in matters of planning, management and use of water resources.
