Citizens in Luanda want to return to a state of emergency due to the increase in cases of covid-19

The majority of the capital's population advocates a return to a state of emergency due to the daily increase in cases of covid-19 in the country, according to a released study.

:

According to an opinion survey by Marktest Angola, 72 percent of the capital's population considers that the state of emergency should be extended "because the pandemic could worsen and it is serious because the cases are increasing".

More than a third of the population, says the study, says that with the enactment of the state of emergency "disease is better avoided".

The study was supported by 324 interviews conducted between May 19 and 21, 2020.

To contain the spread of covid-19 in the country, President João Lourenço decreed a state of emergency that was in force between 27 March and 25 May.

Angola, which has been experiencing a public calamity since 26 May, has 396 positive cases of covid-19, of which 257 are active, 117 have been recovered and 22 have been killed.

More than 100 positive cases, mainly in Luanda, have "an epidemiological link to be identified".

Luanda, the focus of the pandemic, and the municipality of Cazengo, province of Cuanza Norte, are the only locations with positive cases of covid-19.

According to the Marktest Angola study, 28 percent of respondents said that a state of emergency should not be enacted because it makes life difficult for students and those who work, financial problems (38 percent) and food shortages in commerce (27 percent).

Regarding the actions of the Government, Ministry of Health and Defense and Security Forces in the face of the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus, the Luandans, according to the analysis, say that "it is quite positive for any of them".

A large part of the population of Luanda (about 83 percent) applaud the actions of the Ministry of Health for being "doing well and doing very well", a similar score attributed to the Government by 79 percent of the population and the Defense and Security Forces for 66 percent of the population.

Hygiene habits, such as washing hands, cleaning the house more and taking off shoes before entering the house, gradually increased to 89 percent between May and April, the study notes.

The use of news on television and radio also increased during this period.

The survey highlights that the fear of being contaminated by covid-19 (47 percent) and the lack of food (17 percent) "continue to be the two situations that best reflect the fear" of citizens in Luanda.

In the capital, citizens also fear that the National Health System will not be able to respond to the pandemic.

The study by Marktest Angola, a company specialized in market research and opinion polls, was presented this Thursday, in Luanda, by the zoom platform.
