PR participated in the CEEAC Summit that elected Angolan diplomat for the leadership

Despite the setbacks imposed by the pandemic period experienced, João Lourenço did not want to miss his presence - albeit ‘online’ - at the summit that culminated in the election of Gilberto Veríssimo for the leadership of the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC).

The President of the Republic met, via videoconference, with heads of State and Government of the community. For more than six hours, the leaders addressed several issues, with emphasis on the reforms of the institution.

"The organization's treaty was revised, and its protocols were analyzed, within the framework of the new dynamics intended for the", revealed Teté António, Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the end of the conference. Cited by Angop, the head of Angolan diplomacy also said that the ongoing reforms aim to give a new dynamic to the organization.

Gilberto Veríssimo, who will chair the commission for the next five years, said it was essential to make the organization seen by the inhabitants of the Member States as a common space.

The 60-year-old Angolan diplomat was unanimously elected to coordinate the destinations of the Economic Community of Central African States. Veríssimo holds a doctorate in Social Sciences and Strategic Studies, having been a senior staff member at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For the past five years, he has served as Deputy Executive Secretary for Political Affairs for the Gulf of Guinea Commission (CGG).

CEEAC was created in Libreville, Gabon, in 1983. Its main objective is to promote cooperation and self-sustainable development, with emphasis on economic stability and improving the quality of life of the region's population.

The 11 member states that make up the community are Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and São Tomé and Príncipe.

The commission's vice-presidency will be handed over to Ecuadorian-Guinean diplomat Tatchouo Belope Francisca.
