Africa rises total deaths per covid-19 to 14,044 in more than 644,000 cases

Africa has recorded a further 247 deaths in the last 24 hours, totalling 14,044 deaths due to covid-19, in more than 644,000 cases, according to the latest pandemic data on the continent.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected rose to 644,205, up 18,503 from Wednesday, this Thursday's recovery figure being 334,547, up 17,812.

Southern Africa accounts for the highest number of cases (321,951) and registers 4659 deaths, the vast majority concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most infected and dead throughout the continent, with 311,049 cases and 4453 fatalities.

North Africa leads the way in the number of deaths (5608), with 130,216 infections.

West Africa surpassed this Thursday the barrier of 100,000 positive cases, accounting for 100,843, of which 1,638 died.

East Africa surpassed this Thursday the 50,000 infected (50,062), including 1300 deaths, while in Central Africa there are 839 deaths and 41,133 infections.

After South Africa, Egypt is the second country with more deaths, with 4067 and 84,843 cases, followed by Algeria, with 1040 dead and 20,707 infected.

Among the five countries most affected is also Nigeria, with 760 dead and 34,259 infected, and Sudan, with 668 deaths and 10,527 cases.

In relation to the Lusophone African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the highest number of infections and deaths, with 1842 cases and 26 deaths, according to the local authorities.

Cape Verde has 1837 infections and 19 deaths, while Mozambique has 1330 infections and nine deaths.

Sao Tome and Principe has 736 cases and 14 deaths, while Angola has 576 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 27 deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 3071 cases and 51 deaths for several days, according to Africa CDC.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on 14 February and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 584,000 lives and infected more than 13.58 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
