Covid-19: Africa spends half a million cases with nearly 12,000 dead

Africa has passed this Wednesday the half million cases of covid-19 and the number of deaths has risen to 11,955, plus 333 in the last 24 hours, according to the latest data on the pandemic on the continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected has risen to 508,086, up 16,336 in the last 24 hours, while the number recovered is 245,068, up 8702.

Southern Africa has the highest number of cases (223,824) and accounts for 3621 deaths, the vast majority concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most infected throughout the continent, with 215,855 cases, and which this Wednesday passed Egypt and now also leads in the number of deaths (3502).

North Africa leads in the number of deaths (4903), with 115,556 infections.

West Africa has 1470 deaths out of 88,120 infected, East Africa has 1155 deaths and 41,972 cases, while Central Africa has 806 deaths out of 38,614 infections.

After South Africa, Egypt is the second country with the most deaths, with 3489 deaths in 77,279 cases, followed by Algeria, with 959 deaths and 16,404 infected.

Among the five countries most affected is also Nigeria, with 669 dead and 29,789 infected, and Sudan, with 608 deaths, despite having a smaller number of infections (9894).

As for the Lusophone African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the highest number of infections and deaths, with 1790 cases and 25 deaths.

Cape Verde has 1499 infections and 18 deaths, while Mozambique has 1040 infections and eight deaths.

São Tomé e Príncipe has 724 cases and 13 deaths and Angola has 386 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 21 deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 3071 cases and 51 deaths for several days, according to Africa CDC.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on 14 February and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 539,000 lives and infected more than 11.69 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
