Food self-sufficiency five years from now? Agriculture Minister says yes

Francisco de Assis, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, said that Angola has the capacity to achieve food self-sufficiency within five years. However, this 'goal' is dependent on the resolution of problems of various types: human, logistical and market capital.

Based on various indicators in the sector, the holder of the Agriculture portfolio also said that by 2022 the country could reach production values close to three million tons in cereals and 13 to 14 million tons in roots and tubers.

In an interview with public television, Francisco de Assis acknowledged, however, the existence of gaps in terms of human capital, stating that there are ongoing projects that seek to train professionals in this activity.

He also pointed out the importance of considering the agricultural calendar, as well as the acquisition and application of fertilizer in due time, another of the country's great difficulties. The minister acknowledged the constraints on access to fertilizers and the high prices for their acquisition. The required annual stock is 60 thousand tons, at least and without ruptures, he said.

"Our second independence will happen when the country has a fertilizer factory that formulates according to the different characteristics of the country's agroclimatic regions," he said. The official said that he considered it very difficult, especially with regard to family farming, to buy a bag of fertilizer sold at 30,000 kwanzas and one of urea sold at 20,000 kwanzas.

As the last of the great challenges for the development of agriculture and the achievement of the much desired food self-sufficiency, Francisco de Assis pointed out the difficulties in the flow of products. This is an activity that involves other sectors, namely transport, distribution and commerce, and is therefore always conditioned in some way.

The minister also criticized the primacy given to imported products, instead of the preference for what is national, referring that these situations generate distortions in the market.

Having overcome all these problems, the main challenge for the sector will always be the sustainability of the national economy, concluded the minister.
