Prices in Angola increased 1.74 percent between May and June

The country saw a price increase of 1.74 percent between May and June, according to a monthly report by the National Statistics Institute (INE), released this Monday, a figure that puts the 12-month accumulated inflation at the most high since January 2018.

:

According to the National Consumer Price Index (IPCN) Quick Information Sheet, the variation in the last 12 months - between July 2019 and June this year - stands at 22.62 percent, the highest accumulated value since January 2018, when this indicator reached 22.72 percent.

The category "Food and Non-Alcoholic Drinks" was the one that registered the biggest price increase, with 2.28 percent, followed by "Alcoholic Drinks and Tobacco", with a growth of 2.21 percent, "Hotels, Cafes and Restaurants ", with 1.88 percent and" Miscellaneous Goods and Services ", with 1.85 percent.

The "Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages" class was also, according to the INE, "the one that most contributed to the increase in the general price level with 1.09 percentage points during the month of June".

According to INE, the provinces that registered the greatest increase were Cuando Cubango (2.58 percent), Huíla (2.37 percent), Huambo and Bengo (both with 2.31 percent).

On the other hand, the provinces with the least variation were Cunene (1.4 percent), Lunda Sul (1.48 percent), Uíge (1.53 percent) and Zaire (1.74 percent).

In late March, the consultancy FocusEconomics changed its economic growth forecast, anticipating a 1.2 percent recession this year and warning of "severe economic turmoil" in the coming months due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The consultant estimates that inflation in the country should reach 20.2 percent this year.

In early May, the consultancy Oxford Economics announced that Angola's economy will have a negative growth of 2.8 percent this year due not only to the pandemic, but also to the drop in oil prices since March.

On Tuesday, parliament will vote, in general, on the revised General State Budget (OGE) 2020 proposal, estimated at 13.5 billion kwanzas.
