Earthquake of 5.4 makes six provinces shake and causes panic

The provinces of Benguela, Cuanza Sul, Huambo, Bié, Huíla and Namibe shook this Wednesday, following an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, reported the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INAMET).

:

In a statement, to which VerAngola had access, the epicenter was detected approximately 142 kilometers from the city of Namibe, with the earthquake occurring at 8:42 am.

"The INAMET division informs that on June 5, 2024, at 08:42 (local time), an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale, Moderate class, was recorded at the seismic stations of the national network, whose epicenter was detected approximately 142 km from the city of Namibe", the note reads.

The earthquake was felt in six provinces of the country, namely Benguela, Cuanza Sul, Huambo, Bié, Huíla and Namibe, "where material damage occurred", says INAMET.

The phenomenon scared the people, who, heard by Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA) in the provinces of Bié, Benguela, Huíla and Huambo, reported moments of panic due to the earthquake that affected several buildings, some of which were evacuated by firefighters.

To RNA, local authorities and citizens expressed concern about the incident, which, as they described, did not cause human or material damage.

INAMET technicians promised Lusa to provide more details about the incident, but so far they have not commented.

Remember that in September 2023, an earthquake was recorded, approximately 144 kilometers from Menongue, in Cuando Cubando, after a few days earlier Huambo and Bié had shaken with a magnitude 5.2 on the Richter scale, writes Angop.

Another phenomenon of this kind was also felt in Huíla. In August last year, this province shook because of a 2.6 magnitude earthquake.
