"There are, in parliament and in the council of ministers, Christians who believe in God, who have the obligation to know the reality of the people and to know that in no part of the world is there an increase of almost 100 percent", said this Tuesday Belmiro Chissengueti, quoted by Emissora Católica de Angola.
For the also bishop of the diocese of Cabinda, in northern Angola, the increases "have to be gradual to adapt a little to people's minds and purchasing power".
"There are countries that have paralyzed because of a cent in the price of bread", he noted.
"So, the Christians who are there in parliament or in politics must say that this is a lot, because they are in institutions they must influence decisions with their faith, that is their mission", urged the Catholic prelate.
Since last Friday, a liter of gasoline in Angola has cost 300 kwanzas against the previous 160 kwanzas.
The Government announced the gradual withdrawal of gasoline subsidies, maintaining the subsidy to the agricultural sector and fishing.
According to the Minister of State for Economic Coordination, Manuel Nunes Júnior, the rates of taxi drivers and motorcycle taxi drivers will be subsidized, with them continuing to pay 160 kwanzas per liter of gasoline, with the State covering the difference.
Several entities in Angola have already expressed their opposition to this decision by the Government, believing that the measure should make products in the basic food basket more expensive and the lives of the populations.
A protest against the attribution of fuel subsidies, in Huambo, ended with five dead, eight injured and 34 arrested, according to the police.
The Government will liberalize fuel prices, in a phased manner, until 2025, starting with the partial removal of gasoline subsidies, the price of which will be "free and floating" as early as next year.
