Government admits "difficulties" in controlling "overcrowding" in public transport

The Government acknowledged that "it has not been easy to control the overcrowding" that occurs daily in public transport, especially in Luanda, aiming to stop the spread of covid-19, admitting that it is facing "a great challenge".

According to the Minister of Transport, Ricardo de Abreu, "there is a great challenge in terms of public transport", particularly in Luanda, whose limited occupancy rate has risen from 50 percent to the current 75 percent and "has immediately created challenges for operators ".

For the government official who responded this Tuesday to the concerns raised by political parties in opposition about the "overcrowding" in public transport in Luanda, contrary to biosecurity rules, a situation that "often is not easy to control".

"This coordination work at the level of public transport is done in coordination with the Government of Luanda, particularly and with the defense and security bodies, seeking to avoid that there is in fact an overcrowding in public transport, he stressed.

"Which is often not easy for us to control. It is here once again that political parties can also play an important role in limiting the movement of people, avoiding their mobility as much as possible," he stressed.

The concern about the condition of public transport, "with passengers almost in a mess", was presented by Lázaro Kakunha, assistant secretary general of UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola), during a meeting with the Multisectoral Commission for Prevention and Combat to Covid-19.

The "concern" was reiterated by representatives of the Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola - Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE) and the Social Renewal Party (PRS) at the meeting where it was addressed.

Ricardo de Abreu also reported on the issue linked to health passports in Angola, stating that the issue "is in the initial stage of discussions" because "there are measures that are still in progress and we are also pursuing them".

"They have to do with electronic security mechanisms for travel, so IATA (International Air Transport Association) launched an initiative called "IATA Travel Pass" where an electronic tool brings together all the secure passenger information," he explained .

According to the Minister of Transport, a working group "is currently analyzing and subscribing to the aforementioned IATA application with a view to introducing it in Angola".

"The advantage we have, and some steps we have already taken in practice, is the integration of electronic systems between health, migratory, and then air transport operators," he concluded.
