Carlos Mariano: regional asymmetries impede national cohesion

Angolan professor Carlos Mariano defended that "regional asymmetries and favoring some" in the country "do not contribute to the concept of national unity", considering that Angola "is in the incipient phase" of its national construction.

According to the historian, Angola is a post-colonial state "and, inherently, its identity was determined by the European colonizing power and this identity was forged without the consent of its native populations".

"The challenge of the new, modern and current State is to reconcile this vernacular identity with the political and legal identity created with the rise of this territory to the condition of a sovereign and independent State", said Carlos Mariano this Friday, in statements to Lusa, on the sidelines of a debate on "Memories, Identity Affirmations and Feelings of Belonging" held in Luanda by the Center for Studies for Good Governance - UFOLO.

The teacher considered it "paradoxical" Angola to be "still in the incipient phase of its constitution and/or organization", after almost half a century of independence, arguing that "life was very constrained by the fratricidal conflicts" that existed.

"The identities of nationality, supra and subnational in Angola: a contribution to its approach, above all historical" was the theme exposed at the meeting by this Angolan professor, chair of pathology and researcher in history.

"Regional asymmetries" are a problem, as is the perception of citizens that "some are favored and others are not", which "also does not contribute to the concept of national unity", he explained.

"Therefore, it is a tremendous effort that we have to make, because the native populations of this country were united by a foreign power that understood, to pass on this legacy, as a single political unit when we proclaim independence", pointed out the professor of the Faculty of Medicine at the Agostinho Neto University.

The meeting was part of the cycle of national debates on "What is being Angolan/Angolan? Mentality and Appearances" of UFOLO - a non-governmental organization chaired by journalist and civic activist Rafael Marques.
