The National Blood Institute has more than 30 requests daily, which it is unable to meet due to the reduced number of donors, informed the health authorities.

According to the Secretary of State for the Hospital Area, Leonardo European, who was speaking in the context of the World Blood Donor Day, which was marked this Monday, most people in need of transfusions receive blood from their families.

The official said that the World Health Organization recommends reaching the goal of 300,000 volunteer donors per year, calling on society to donate blood to ensure its continued existence in health facilities, reducing the waiting time for "this precious drop and improving the service to the user and his/her family".

"We need 89 percent of donors for us to have our blood reserves guaranteed at the level of the National Blood Institute", said Leonardo Europe.

The director of the National Blood Institute, Deodeth Machado, informed that, from January to May this year, 40,782 blood bags were donated, having been the main donors, as is usually the case with the patients' relatives.

"We are dealing with a bout of anemia as a result of malaria and we are often not able to respond immediately to the situations, unfortunately, science has not yet been able to produce something that resembles blood," said Deodeth Machado.
