Covid-19: Death toll in Africa rises to 8856 in over 336,000 cases

The death toll in Africa due to covid-19 has risen to 8856, an additional 238 in the last 24 hours, in about 336,000 cases, according to the most recent data on the continent's pandemic.

According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), the number of infected people is 336,019, plus 11,323 cases in the last 24 hours.

The number of recovered is 160,833, plus 6663.

Southern Africa records the highest number of cases (116,587) and accounts for 2,263 deaths, the vast majority concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most infected across the continent (111,796) and which has 2205 fatalities.

North Africa leads in the number of deaths (3717), in 87,807 infections.

West Africa counts 1196 deaths out of 66,593 infected, East Africa has 990 fatalities and 33,253 cases, while in Central Africa there are 690 deaths out of 31,779 infections.

Egypt, the African country with the most fatalities, accounts for 2,450 deaths and 59,561 cases of infection, followed by South Africa and then Algeria, with 869 fatalities and 12,248 infected.

Among the five most affected countries is Nigeria, with 542 dead and 22,020 infected, and Sudan, with 548 deaths, despite having a lower number of infections (8889).

As for the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau is the one with the most infections and deaths, with 1556 cases and 19 fatalities.

Cape Verde has 999 infections and eight deaths and Mozambique counts 762 infected patients and five deaths.

São Tomé and Príncipe accounts for 710 cases and 13 deaths and Angola has 197 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 10 deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 2001 cases and keeps 32 dead, according to Africa CDC.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed almost 479,000 deaths and infected more than 9.3 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
