Ten policemen arrested for involvement in the killing of citizens

Ten policemen, accused of the deaths of Angolan citizens, from the period of the state of emergency to the present date, have been arrested and are going to answer criminally for the acts committed, the spokesman of the Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday.

According to Waldemar José, investigations are being opened and disciplinary and criminal proceedings are underway, which have already been referred to the prosecutors for their accountability.

Waldemar José said that the individual behaviour of police officers cannot be confused with the institution, reinforcing that "these actions cannot be considered as collective".

"Because the National Police has more than 120,000 men and ten have committed these actions in isolation, and will be properly held accountable," he said.

The spokesman for the Interior Ministry admitted that the police "have unfortunately been more involved in the actions that culminated in the death of citizens".

In recent times, the actions of the police have been severely criticized by citizens because of the deaths they have caused among the population in their actions.

Since the beginning of the state of emergency, decreed on 27 March due to the new coronavirus pandemic, several incidents involving police and citizens have resulted in deaths, in situations of enforcing measures to prevent and combat covid-19 in the country.
