Government postpones transfer of international flights to new airport until October

The Government has extended the deadline for transferring international flights to António Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN), initially scheduled for June, until October, said a source close to the process.

:

The information was provided by the Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, Maritime and Ports, Rui Carreira, who was speaking to journalists at a session held on Tuesday on the Expansion and Modernisation Programme for the Transport and Logistics Sector.

According to Rui Carreira, airport operations will move from the current Luanda international airport “4 de Fevereiro” to AIAAAN in the next five months, due to “challenges” that still exist in terms of access to the airport, located in the province of Icolo e Bengo and which is around 40 kilometres from the centre of the capital.

Rui Carreira, quoted by Jornal de Angola, said that the difficulties in access were noted during the last visit to that infrastructure carried out by President João Lourenço.

According to the government official, the decision to postpone was taken because there was still “homework to be done” to improve access to the airport, in addition to the challenges in terms of its operationality, which is still marked by delayed contracts, making it difficult to It is unlikely that the process will be finalized next month.

“It is expected that all international flights will be authorized at this stage and that the airport will enter its full operational phase,” highlighted Rui Carreira.

Inaugurated on November 10, 2023, AIAAN currently operates domestic and cargo flights.
