Caála resumes wheat production more than a decade later

The municipality of Caála (Huambo) has resumed wheat production, which had been stopped for 13 years.

:

The resumption of this production – by the municipality's farmers, in the current agricultural season – is the result of the installation of two factories for processing pasta and wheat flour, which are in the process of being finalized in the Industrial Development Pole of Caála.

The information was provided by Domingos Capita, president of the Vale do Calai cooperative. Speaking to Angop, he informed that at the beginning of the agricultural campaign 700 families working in the field enjoyed seeds of this cereal, obtained in Zambia by the management of the aforementioned factories, in collaboration with the Agricultural Development Extension, aiming at encouraging wheat production.

According to the official, it is expected that 500 thousand tons of this cereal will be harvested – which is being cultivated in a perimeter of 228 hectares – with a view to the sustainability of the manufacturing units and, consequently, to help in the reduction of the price of bread, writes the Angop.

The reason for the interruption of wheat production in Caála, which took place in 2010, was the lack of sales opportunities and an attractive market that would make it possible, at that time, to compensate farmers for their efforts, said the official who, quoted by Angop, added that the factories allowed the peasants to resume this production, since wheat is assumed as the main raw material for their activities.
