Protection of turtles among the bets of the Kitabanga project

The preservation of sea turtles is among the commitments of the Kitabanga project, which, to this end, decided to reinforce environmental education campaigns in Porto Amboim (Cuanza Sul).

With an element of research, information, conservation, environmental education and social inclusion of the community that interacts with the initiative – a total of 70 sea turtles –, the project has an extension of 105 kilometres.

The information was provided by Michel Morais, mentor of the project, who – speaking to Angop – made it known that 17 points were systematically monitored, with data collected in order to understand the status of these species in the country.

In addition, the official also admitted that there are "clashes" with regard to the relationship between Kitabanga and artisanal fishermen.

"There are always clashes, especially in the locality of Longa, but dialogue has prevailed to dictate limitations in favor of the preservation of marine species", he said, quoted by Angop.

On the other hand, it indicated that there was enormous pressure from large boats, related to semi-industrial and industrial fishing, which at night carried out trawls very close to the coast. Thus, he indicated the lack of inspection policies as a huge problem, taking the opportunity to recall that it is a protected area, thus being subject to certain fishing limitations, writes Angop.

Michel Morais also said that the costs of the initiative are high, justifying: "because it is about thousands of kwanzas, as there is a systematic mobility that extends from the north to the south region working every day".

Regarding the origin of the funds, the official made it known that at its base are donations from partners, essentially during the spawning season, writes Angop.

Having started in 2010, in the area of palmerinhas, in the capital, the Kitabanga extends along the coast of the country – which has five species of this marine animal, three of which spawn with a certain frequency on the coast.
