Carlos de São Vicente's family appeals to the Portuguese Prime Minister to intercede with João Lourenço

The family of Luso-Angolan businessman Carlos de São Vicente, in pre-trial detention since September 2020, has written to the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, asking him to address the issue at his meeting with the President, João Lourenço, this Tuesday in Paris.

According to a note sent on behalf of the family, the letter addressed to António Costa highlights Carlos de São Vicente's status as a Portuguese citizen and the businessman's "increasingly precarious health", as well as how preventive detention "offends elementary principles of the democratic rule of law", according to a constitutionalist opinion.

It is "time for the Portuguese State to make a diplomatic statement at the highest level regarding a situation that is being followed around the world and involves a citizen of Portugal, innocent and persecuted, wrongfully imprisoned since September 22, 2020," the missive states.

The family points out that their companies in Portugal, which employ more than fifty workers, are behind in their salaries and have outstanding debts to banks, the State and suppliers due to the situation created by the Angolan justice system.

Carlos de São Vicente, owner of the AAA group of companies, one of the largest private conglomerates in Angola, and holder for several years of Sonangol's insurance and reinsurance monopoly, was formally charged with the crimes of embezzlement, money laundering and tax fraud, having been notified of the indictment on March 17.

The Attorney General's Office also requested the freezing of bank accounts and seizure of assets of Irene Neto, daughter of the first Angolan president, Agostinho Neto, and wife of the businessman.

António Costa and João Lourenço will hold a bilateral meeting on the future of African economies, at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, to discuss African debt financing and the future of the private sector on the continent with African and European leaders.
