Angolan Angelina Vunge becomes Uruguay's first African Member of Parliament

The Angolan Angelina Vunge is the first African member of the Uruguayan parliament. The Angolan took up the parliamentary seat on April 14.

"Believe me, it is very important for me to be here today. It is a special day for me," said the Angolan woman about the achievement, when the Speaker of the House of Representatives passed the floor to her.

"I come from an African country. I went through difficulties, I lived through emergency situations, through war. I know perfectly well what is happening now in this country, which is the challenge in the face of that enemy that nobody sees," she said, quoted by Plataforma.

Angelina Vunge lived a troubled childhood, marked by labor exploitation, domestic violence, and several sexual abuses.

However, it was the civil war in the country that led the Angolan to flee Angola. She arrived in Uruguay without documents, unable to speak the language, without a job, and without money. Twenty years later, Angelina Vunge is a member of that country's parliament.

In Uruguay she met a taxi driver, who offered to help her with her residency and citizenship documents. Later they ended up getting married and had two children. Angelina learned Spanish and started working as a waitress in a restaurant.

One day, on a walk with her children near the legislative palace, the Angolan said that one day she would still work there. In November 2019, the dream came true: Angelina Vunge was elected deputy deputy by the ruling National Party, and took office on April 14 this year.
