The law published on Tuesday in the Diário da República (Official Gazette) mentions the need to authorise additional credit in the State Budget for the acquisition of 4,190,000 vaccines through the African Union, but does not specify what they are intended for.

Last month, the President, João Lourenço, announced a support of 50 million dollars from the European Bank and Investment, for the purchase of vaccines, during the visit of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

In March, the government provided 111 million dollars to buy six million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine, produced in Russia.

Besides Sputnik V, Angola also received 600 thousand doses of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine, under the Covax initiative, and the delivery of around 2.5 million doses is foreseen until mid 2021, as well as 200 thousand doses of Sinopharm vaccine, from the Beijing Biological Institute.

Angola registers 31,049 cases and 685 deaths due to the new coronavirus.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 3.391.849 deaths in the world, resulting from more than 163,5 million cases of infection, according to a balance made by the French agency AFP.
