Covid-19: Africa with 247 more dead and 6802 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 247 deaths associated with covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 122,329 since the start of the pandemic, and 6802 new cases of infection, according to the most recent official data on the continent.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the organization's 55 member states is 4,574,042 and that of those recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours is 6337, rising to 4,117,235 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Southern Africa continues to be the most affected region, with 1,972,613 infected and 62,153 dead associated with contagion with the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, records 1,584,064 cases and 54,417 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area, with 1,372,744 infected and 40,168 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 607,335 infections and 11,368 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 460,101 and that of deaths is 6071. In Central Africa, there are 161,249 cases of infection and 2,569 registered deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 13,469 deaths and 229,635 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 10,868 deaths and 311,743 cases of infection. Morocco accounts for 511,856 cases of infection and 9028 deaths associated with covid-19.

Among the countries most affected are Ethiopia, with 3726 fatalities and 258,384 infections, and Algeria, with 3270 dead and 122,522 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique recorded 815 deaths and 69,984 cases, followed by Angola (602 deaths and 26,993 cases of infection), Cape Verde (224 deaths and 24,368 cases), Equatorial Guinea (112 deaths and 7694 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (67 dead and 3736 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (35 killed and 2310 cases).
