Huíla: police detain poachers who slaughter elephants for ivory trafficking

The police arrested seven poachers, including a inspector, in the Bicuar National Park, in Huíla province, who were mainly hunting elephants for the sale of ivory.

The suspects' detention took place as part of investigations carried out by the local Criminal Investigation Service (SIC), which also culminated in the seizure of seven firearms.

"The detention of seven citizens in the Bicuar National Park of these citizens, presumed authors of the crime of criminal association, with seven firearms found in their possession. They were detained in flagrante delicto," said the SIC spokesman in Huíla, Sebastião Vika, speaking to the radio.

According to the official, detainees had the preference of slaughtering elephants to sell ivory.

One of those involved, in statements to the radio, said that he killed an elephant and traded the ivory to a Namibian citizen, at the price of 5000 rand (355 dollars).
