The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced this Thursday the new dates for the men's pre-Olympic tournament, for June/July 2021, to be played in Belgrade, Split, Kaunas and Victoria.

At stake are the four remaining spots available for the Tokyo2020 Olympic Games in 2021, which will be joined by Spain (world champion), Argentina, Australia, France, Iran, Japan (host), Nigeria and the United States, which have already been determined.

All matches will be played between 29 June and 4 July 2021, with only one country qualifying per tournament. The participants had already been drawn since November 2019 for this year's pre-Olympic, which was not played because of the covid-19 pandemic.

In Belgrade, they will play Dominican Republic, New Zealand, Serbia, Puerto Rico, Italy and Senegal. In the Lithuanian city of Kaunas will be Lithuania, South Korea, Venezuela, Poland, Slovenia and Angola.

Split, in Croatia, will host Germany, Russia, Mexico, Tunisia, Croatia and Brazil, while in Victoria (Canada) they will face Greece, China, Canada, Uruguay, Czech Republic and Turkey.

For women's basketball, the FIBA confirmed the berths won at the Belgrade pre-Olympics held in February, before the state of the pandemic was decreed - they will be in Tokyo, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Japan, South Korea, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Serbia, the United States and Spain.

Globally, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed over 297 000 lives and infected more than 4.3 million people in 196 countries and territories, forcing most sporting competitions to be suspended or postponed, such as the Tokyo Olympic Games, which were held in the summer of 2021.
