Platform 27 May calls for differentiated treatment of political conflicts for 1977 repression

The Platform 27 May, which brings together three organisations of relatives of the victims of the 1977 repression in the country, considers the law justifying deaths due to political conflicts to be "insufficient" and advocates that this process be dealt with separately.

:

The communiqué, signed by the members of the Platform (27 May Association, M27 Association and the 27 May Survivors' Group), considers the so-called "Special Regime of Justification of Deaths Occurring as a Result of Political Conflicts", to be "manifestly insufficient" to respond to the appeals of the relatives of the victims and survivors and not even a starting point for a real process of national reconciliation.

The law, passed last week by the National Assembly, provides for a simplification in obtaining death certificates for those cases where it has not been possible to comply with such a legal formality to date, avoiding recourse to judicial life.

For the Platform, however, a complete historical record is needed to ascertain violations and abuses, detailed identification of victims and perpetrators, as well as people with moral and material responsibility for these acts during the "bloody repression".

"It is essential that the 27 May 1977 process be dealt with separately from other political conflicts so that a serious, impartial and responsible investigation can be carried out", they call for.

The 27th of May 1977 refers to the date of an alleged failed coup against the first President, António Agostinho Neto, which led to thousands of deaths in extra-judicial executions, according to several analysts and survivors.

The Platform also maintains "the claim of an express request for forgiveness, by the State or its agents, for such crimes", providing the perpetrators, still alive, "the opportunity to break with the past", ask for forgiveness and confess where the remains of the victims still missing are deposited.
