Cabinda Liberation Front extends ceasefire because of covid-19

The Cabinda Liberation Front (FLEC), through its Armed Forces Staff, has announced that it will extend the ceasefire due to the covid-19 for another 30 days, starting at midnight on Thursday.

In a statement, to which the Lusa Agency had access, FLEC-FAC (Armed Forces of Cabinda) stressed that the first ceasefire was declared on 13 April in response to the appeal launched by the United Nations Secretary-General to combat the covid-19 pandemic.

"Due to the worsening health situation in Cabinda caused by the proliferation of covid-19, and again responding to the UN Secretary General's appeal, FLEC-FAC extends the ceasefire for a further 30 days, starting at midnight on 14 May," the statement reads.

During the ceasefire period decreed by the FLEC-FAC, the communiqué stressed, "the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) continued their attacks against our forces and the civilian populations of Cabinda".

Finally, the independence force in Cabinda reaffirms "once again its willingness to establish a dialogue to create the conditions to end the conflict in Cabinda".

Created in 1963, the independence organization has split and multiplied into different, ephemeral factions, with FLEC-FAC remaining the only movement claiming to maintain "armed resistance against the Luanda administration.
