Covid-19: Africa's death toll rises to 3696 in over 124,000 cases

The death toll in Africa from covid-19 has increased to 3696 in the past 24 hours, plus 107, in more than 124,000 cases of infection in 54 countries, according to data on the continent's pandemic.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the death toll has risen in the last 24 hours from 3589 to 3696 (+107), while infection cases have increased from 119,391 to 124,482 (+5091).

The total number of recovered patients rose from 48,618 to 51,095 (+2477).

North Africa is the region most affected by the disease on the continent, with 1708 dead and 37,566 infected with the new coronavirus.

West Africa records 663 deaths and 31,279 infections, while Southern Africa accounts for 575 deaths and 27,858 cases, almost all in a single country, South Africa (25,937).

East Africa reports 383 deaths and 13,850 recorded cases and in Central Africa there are 367 fatalities in 13,939 cases.

Six countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Ghana - concentrate about half of the infections by the new coronavirus in the continent and more than two thirds of the deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (816) and has 19,666 infections, followed by Algeria, with 623 fatalities and 8857 infected.

South Africa is the third with more deaths (552), continuing to be the country in the continent with more cases of covid-19 (25,937).

Morocco totals 202 fatalities and 7,601 cases, Nigeria reports 254 deaths and 8733 cases, while Ghana has 34 deaths and 7,303 cases.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the most infections, with 1195 cases, and records seven deaths.

São Tomé and Príncipe counts 441 cases and 12 deaths and Cape Verde has 390 infections and four deaths.

Mozambique counts 227 infected patients and one deceased and Angola has 73 confirmed cases of covid-19 and four deceased.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has exceeded one thousand positive cases of infection (1043) and 12 dead, according to Africa CDC.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 352,000 deaths and infected more than 5.6 million people in 196 countries and territories.

About 2.2 million patients were considered cured.
