Diabetics are ten times more likely to be infected with covid-19

The risk of a diabetic being infected with the covid-19 virus is ten times higher than that of a person who does not suffer from this disease. The warning was given by Manuela Sandes, an angolan endocrinologist.

The specialist explained that coronavirus has a three times greater evolution in diabetics because they have a weaker immune system.

The internal doctor of the Military Hospital of Luanda, who spoke on the sidelines of the "Covid-19 Talk at the CIAM," also revealed that, according to some studies conducted recently, half of the people who died because of the virus had diabetes, writes Angop.

Manuela Sandes was particularly concerned about the Angolan population, since there are several people who do not have diabetes under control, which could be a higher risk factor for covid-19.

For this reason, the expert advised that all diabetics should seek medical help so that they can take the appropriate medication and thus control the disease. She also asked them not to leave home and to comply strictly with the prevention measures implemented by the executive.

In Angola, out of a total of 30 million people, about two million are diagnosed with diabetes, he said.

"An untreated diabetic and without periodic monitoring by the doctor becomes a very complicated patient," he warned.

The doctor also stressed that the treatment of a diabetic is around 60 thousand kwanzas per month and that she understands that many patients cannot afford this cost: "The treatment of diabetes if not reimbursed by the state is impossible to be supported only by the patient.

She also complained about the lack of specialists to cope with the number of patients. Each week, each endocrinologist attends to about 40 diabetics, however, the country has only 11 doctors trained in this area.
