According to National Police spokesman Valdemar José, the case happened at the market and beach of Tombas, in Benguela, which is dedicated to selling fish. The security forces were reportedly called to the place where a dispute between fish sellers was taking place.

"Unfortunately they were received with sticks, knives, machetes, stones, etc.", he stressed, adding that if the police are called to restore order "it's not acceptable at all" that "it is received bluntly by the citizens to the point where we have some injured policemen".

According to Valdemar José, if shots were not fired to disperse the people, it is not known "what the outcome would be".

As a result of this action, the police "injured a 26-year-old citizen and ended up killing another 14-year-old citizen", he said, lamenting the incident.

The Benguela Province Command of the National Police said in a statement that three young men, two 16 and one 19 years old, were arrested and were "on the trail of other fugitive suspects".

This is the second case in five days. On Saturday, another young man, 21 years old, in Luanda, died as a result of shots fired by police to disperse a gathering of people in the Rocha Pinto area of Luanda.

According to the police, the citizens "left for aggression against the forces of order, throwing sticks, stones and bottles", but relatives of the young man claim to have been killed because he was not wearing a mask.

The police have been accused of excessive use of force during the state of emergency, which Angola has been carrying out since 27 March, to contain the covid-19 pandemic.

For their part, the police authorities have reported acts of disobedience and even physical aggression by citizens against the officers.
