According to the orthopedist at the General Hospital of Ondjiva, Desidério Ndaondjapo, the victims activated the device when playing with the object, causing serious injuries to the lower limbs, which motivated the amputation.

The doctor, quoted by Angop, said that one of the minors lost both legs and the other just one, pointing out that a 60 mm mortar was the source of the incident.

Desidério Ndaondjapo also said that patients are out of danger of life, compared to the first 48 hours.

In 2019, the province of Cunene recorded the deaths of five people and the injury of another due to the mine explosion.

In Cunene, in southern Angola, three organizations are involved in demining activities in the province.
