NGO calls for inquiry into the death of the baby of an Angolan activist held in Maputo

The Mozambican Network of Human Rights Defenders asked for an inquiry into the death, at the main Mozambican public hospital, of the baby of Angolan citizen Gelson Emanuel Quintas 'Man-Genas', who is in custody of the authorities with his family, in Maputo.

:

"It is necessary to carry out tests (autopsy) to find out the reason for the baby's death", the president of the Mozambican Network of Human Rights Defenders, Adriano Nuvunga, told Lusa.

The newborn daughter of Angolan whistleblower 'Man-Genas' died on 7 April, two days after her mother, who is also in the custody of the authorities, gave birth at the Central Hospital in Maputo.

For the Mozambican Network of Human Rights Defenders, the wife of 'Man-Genas' was treated with "negligence" by the authorities, accusing them of not having allowed the woman to have prenatal care.

"We can say that there was negligence on the part of our State in the first place. In our conversations with the hospital, the doctors said that the condition in which she arrived at the hospital did not give the baby much chance of life", said Nuvunga, who accuses also the authorities of having taken the woman from 'Man-Genas' to the hospital only when she started to have "abortion symptoms".

"The right to health [of the mother and baby] has always been in question", added the Mozambican activist accompanying the process.

The director of the Gynecology Department at the Maputo Central Hospital, where the delivery took place, told the private channel STV that the woman was admitted to the establishment with "an obstetric complication", but "everything was done to save the baby".

"Maputo Central Hospital received the lady with an obstetric complication, which affected a still premature pregnancy", declared Agostinho Daniel.

Last week, a group of deputies from the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) said at a press conference that 'Man-Genas' "fears of food poisoning".

"The 'Man-Genas' fears he may be the victim of food poisoning. His wife, who is pregnant, denounces having been denied medical assistance for more than a month", said Olívio Quilumbo, who headed a UNITA parliamentary delegation, who visited Maputo, between the 21st and 26th of March.

Lusa in Maputo tried, without success, to contact the National Migration Service of Mozambique.

"Man Genas", who fled to Mozambique after alleged persecution in Angola, is in custody with his family for denouncing the alleged involvement of high national authorities in drug trafficking.

The allegations led a parliamentary commission to question the Minister of the Interior, Eugénio César Laborinho last month, who rejected any involvement of high-ranking security forces.
