UNITA: Angolan man who denounced alleged involvement of authorities in drug trafficking “fears poisoning” in Mozambique

Angolan citizen Gelson Emanuel Quintas 'Man-Genas', who has been in custody with his family in Mozambique for more than a year for denouncing alleged involvement of high Angolan authorities in drug trafficking, "fears of food poisoning", said UNITA this Wednesday.

A group of MPs from the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) was in Mozambique from 21 to 26 March last to intercede with the authorities and civil society in that country for the protection and freedom of 'Man-Genas'.

This Wednesday, at a press conference in Luanda, the head of the UNITA parliamentary delegation, Olívio Quilumbo, presented the report of the visit, noting that the state of health of that Angolan "is weak and needs care".

"The 'Man-Genas' fears being a victim of food poisoning. His wife, who is pregnant, denounces having been denied medical assistance for more than a month", he said, referring that she lacks prenatal care.

The wife of citizen 'Man-Genas', said the UNITA deputy, also fears for her life "during the delivery expected very soon".

According to the report, the UNITA parliamentary delegation was prevented from directly contacting the citizen and his family held there and that interaction was only possible by telephone.

'Man-Genas' denounced, more than a month ago via social media, the alleged involvement of senior figures from the national police and the Angolan Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) in drug trafficking.

He, his wife and two other children decided to leave the country due to alleged "pressure from the authorities" and fear of life, as they denounced several times on social networks, especially after arriving in Mozambique, from a police station, where they are now.

The wife of 'Man-Genas', in videos shared on social networks, calls for help, for medical assistance and also denounces assassination attempts in that Portuguese-speaking country.

UNITA deputies said they were received by the ambassador of Angola in Mozambique to find out about the juridical-legal and humanitarian situation of Gelson Emanuel Quintas, his wife and children.

They also held a meeting with the Mozambican National Migration Service (SENAMI), where they requested clarification on the situation of Angolans in that country, "but there was no willingness on the part of those in charge".

The Ministry of the Interior of Mozambique and SENAMI "showed a lack of openness and availability" to respond to the request of the UNITA parliamentary group delegation, reads the report.

Both institutions, observe the deputies of the "maninhos", rejected their formal request for the visit and direct contact with 'Man-Genas' and family.

They recommend that the ministries of Foreign Affairs, the Interior and Health of the Republic of Angola, in concert with the counterpart ministries of Mozambique, ensure and guarantee conditions of asylum, security and medical assistance to the family of 'Man-Genas'.

They also ask that the Attorney General's Office (PGR), within the framework of the judicial agreements between the two States, investigate and investigate the complaints made by the citizen and that human rights organizations and the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights mobilize to draw attention to the "seriousness" of the situation of the Angolan citizen and family.

"That the African States, truly committed to the fight against drug trafficking, learn lessons about the alleged involvement of public agents with a network of drug traffickers", they further recommend.

UNITA deputies also held meetings with the president of the RENAMO parliamentary group – National Resistance of Mozambique (opposition) -, with actors from Mozambican civil society and spoke to local and international media in order to inform and raise awareness about the situation of family concerned.

Government authorities in Luanda have yet to comment on the 'Man-Genas' case.
