Political parties must refrain from using judicial power to “atone for sins”

The president of the Constitutional Court said this Thursday, in Luanda, that “political parties must compete with each other and not use public institutions, with emphasis on the judiciary, as goats to atone for their respective sins”.

"It is imperative that we internalize the following: justice cannot be seen as unfair when it does not decide in our favor and fair when it decides in our favor", said Laurinda Cardoso, at the opening of a seminar aimed at parties, coalitions of parties and installation commissions of political parties, with legalization processes underway at the Constitutional Court, regarding doubts in the act of presenting and formalizing candidacies in the general elections of August this year.

Laurinda Cardoso also referred that the Constitutional Court has "an important share of responsibility" in building trust in the electoral process, assuming this responsibility "in its fullness and with all enthusiasm".

"In fact, it is necessary to create confidence in the process and in all its phases - as you know, the electoral process comprises several phases, one of which is related to the presentation of candidacies, which includes the collection of signatures by political parties and coalitions of parties that intend to run in the general elections; the appointment of representatives of the list and the process of impugning candidacies and candidates, as well as electoral disputes and related matters", emphasized the president.

The presiding judge of the Constitutional Court stressed that with the seminar, which is part of a pre-candidacy phase, the Constitutional Court actively assumes its responsibility to meet political parties and coalitions of parties to, in a pedagogical and instructive way, to dialogue, train, inform, clarify and assist representatives of different political forces on the requirements and procedures for preparing their candidacy for elections, as well as the legal regime of electoral disputes and infractions.

At the seminar, participants will be assisted in the details of "how the application documents must be completed and presented", offering a suggestion of models.

Angola will hold its fifth general elections in the second half of August this year, with the Office of Political Parties of the Constitutional Court having registered 11 political parties and an electoral coalition, with ten installation commissions with pending processes for the legalization of political parties.
