The young man, who graduated in Cuba, at the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery of Havana, has been working for about a year and four months at the Central Hospital of Lubango "Dr. Agostinho Neto". In addition to responding to cases of this specialty in Huila, the specialist also sees cases from Namibe, Cuando Cubango and Cunene.
Considering that his work is very rewarding, Emanuel Silva admitted that the fact of being the only neurosurgeon in that region is a great responsibility.
"It is rewarding when we can and manage to help, on the one hand, but on the other, it is exhausting, because neurosurgery is a team specialty and we need more colleagues," he said, speaking to Angop.
The young man made it known that he receives patients frequently and that he has to be ready to observe them at any time. He added that the neurosurgery specialty is in great demand, indicating cases of traumatic brain injury, hydrocephalus, among others, as the most frequent.
According to the neurosurgeon, at this moment the monthly average of surgeries is between 30 and 35.
Even being the only specialist in that province, the young man makes a positive balance of his work. Emanuel Silva says he is managing to reduce the mortality rate of people with trauma as well as monitoring patients in the post-surgery period.
He also regretted the fact that the hospital where he works does not yet have more advanced means and equipment, adding that he is "working with the minimum resources available.
"We are working with the minimum resources available, which has not been easy, but we always give a positive response, according to the means at our disposal, so that patients have a humanized and higher quality care," he indicated.
The young man added that he has used digital platforms to make his work known to the population.
