Covid-19: Africa with 235 more dead and 9029 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 235 deaths associated with covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 117,890 since the start of the pandemic, and 9029 new cases of infection, according to the most recent official data on the continent.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the organization's 55 member states is 4,428,486 and that of those recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours is 7,218, to a total of 3,966,193 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Southern Africa continues to be the most affected region, with 1,942,829 infected and 61,282 dead associated with contagion with the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, records 1,566,769 cases and 53,736 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area, with 1,317,699 infected and 37,999 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 571,253 infections and 10,361 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 450,186 and that of deaths is 5918. Central Africa accounts for 146,519 cases of infection and 2330 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 12,738 deaths and 216,334 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 9783 deaths and 285,490 cases of infection. Morocco records 505,811 cases of infection and 8945 deaths associated with covid-19.

Among the countries most affected are Algeria, with 3,155 dead and 119,550 infected, and Ethiopia, with 3,370 fatalities and 242,028 infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 798 deaths and 69,203 cases, followed by Angola (561 deaths and 24,839 cases of infection), Cape Verde (192 deaths and 20,466 cases), Equatorial Guinea (106 deaths and 7259 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (66 deaths and 3712 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (35 deaths and 2271 cases).
