The Minister of State and Head of the Security House, who coordinates the interministerial commission to combat the pandemic, said that there are currently thousands of Angolans waiting to return to the country, which closed borders on 20 March.

Pedro Sebastião pointed out, in a press conference, that in Lisbon alone there are more than 1500 passengers waiting for a flight to Luanda, in Porto more than 900, in São Paulo (Brazil) more than 1200, in Havana (Cuba) about 250 and in Johannesburg (South Africa) more than 1000 are waiting for the possibility of returning home.

“It is a great effort that we would have to make and that I do not advise at this moment”, underlined the official, recalling what happened with the flights of the 17th and 18th of March, when hundreds of passengers returned to Luanda, creating chaos at the airport and criticism of the government due to the lack of conditions in the spaces designated for institutional quarantine.

Covid-19 has already caused the death of an Angolan priest in France, with two Angolan citizens currently hospitalized in Portugal and two others in China, announced Health Minister Sílvia Lutucuta.

"We have a death in France, an Angolan priest, and we have been doing work with our diplomatic missions, internationally, to ensure that there is a follow-up of all Angolans who are abroad," said the minister, in a assessment of the first week of state of emergency in Angola.

In Portugal, two Angolans are hospitalized and two Angolans are hospitalized in China.

He explained that funerals must observe certain public health rules and that people who die must be buried at the place, or in the country where they died because it is not possible to transfer bodies, according to the rules established by the World Health Organization .
