President asks parliament to extend state of emergency

This Thursday, the President of the Republic asked the National Assembly to extend the state of emergency for another 15 days, given the "imminent situation of public calamity" due to the new coronavirus.

João Lourenço's letter was read in the National Assembly by the Minister of State and head of the Security House of the President of the Republic, Pedro Sebastião, at the beginning of an extraordinary plenary session where the request of the President of the Republic regarding the possibility of renewing the emergency state.

In the letter, the head of state considered that the reasons underlying the declaration of a state of emergency remain current and unchanged.

"And unfortunately, positive cases of contamination of Covid-19 in our country are confirmed practically every day," said João Lourenço.

In this sense, “considering that the situation of imminent public calamity remains present and that the exceptional measures for the prevention and control of the disease must continue to be implemented, I use the gift to request again their offices (…) for the purpose of extending the the state of emergency for another 15 days, ”he said.

Angola has already recorded two deaths out of a total of 19 positive cases from Covid-19, being in the first phase of the state of emergency, which ends at 11:59 pm on 11 April since last March 27.
