Traditional therapists condemn charlatan "madness"

The Chamber of Traditional Angolan Therapists condemned this Wednesday the appearance of phytotherapists with alleged cure of covid-19 in the country, alerting the population to compliance with the guidelines of the health authorities, and not "charlatans with madness and lies".

The position was expressed by the executive president of the Professional Chamber of Therapists of Traditional, Natural, Alternative and Unconventional Medicine in Angola, Kitoko Mayavangua, ensuring that "for the time being, there is no plant" for the cure of covid-19, a disease caused by the new coronavirus.

He repudiates the allegations of therapists who have appeared in the media with a supposed cure for the pandemic, in particular Andrade Kichimba, whose video has become viral on social networks in Angola, guaranteeing that he "does not attend the Chamber and measures will be taken".

In statements to Lusa in Luanda, "Papa Kitoko", as he is also known in the country, also expressed concern about the evolution of the disease in the world, stating that the Chamber is "hand in hand" with the health authorities in raising awareness.

"We are also exercising our role in raising awareness in the communities where we appeal, from house to house, for the need for regular hand washing and body hygiene to contain the pandemic," he said.

Angola is on Wednesday the thirteenth day of the state of emergency declared to contain the spread of covid-19, with 17 positive cases, including two recovered and two deaths.

More than a thousand people are in institutional and home quarantine throughout the country.

According to the executive president of the Chamber of Traditional Therapists of Angola, the time is ripe for research and calls for protection measures in the communities and "not to create panic within the population with the emergence of charlatans.

Because, observed the traditional therapist, prevention "is the only one for everyone" and when you find a curative plant (for the coronavirus), he stressed, someone "has to write, present the arguments for the proper laboratory referral to the authorities".

"We can't appear in the press and try to present madness or lies. We need to look and follow the information and go looking with investigations to get there", he pointed out.

"My appeal is to colleagues to mobilize the people for unique prevention," said Kitoko Mayavangua, noting that the House "is seriously immersed in investigations.

According to him, the House and its associates "have not yet received any requests from citizens eager to cure the disease" which, if they do, will be promptly notified to the health authorities.

"The situation in the country, already with 17 cases, is worrying and we have to make efforts to mobilize so that the cases do not increase. The people need stability and security at this stage," he said.

The Professional Chamber of Traditional, Natural, Alternative and Non-Conventional Medicine Therapists in Angola, which controls 61,000 members, wants to join the team of multi-sector specialists working to contain the pandemic in the country.
