Fernande Renée considers the state of mangroves in Lobito to be worrying

The state of mangroves in Lobito, Benguela province, is worrying. The consideration comes from Fernanda Renée, president of Otchiva – a project dedicated to the protection of mangroves –, who called for the intensification of dissemination of environmental issues, so that citizens become aware of their relevance and begin to behave differently.

Condemning the recent environmental crimes that took place in the municipality of Lobito, carried out by young people, using mosquito nets to catch small fish and other substances from migratory birds, Renée reiterated the need to "educate and raise awareness among the population".

"It is necessary to continue to educate and raise awareness among the population, including our public managers, because we are often faced with the transfer of land in these ecosystems", she highlighted, quoted by Angop.

The expert said that the sanctions applied to offenders are light, recognizing that the government has been "tightening" a little more.

Fernanda Renée sees this as a "sign" that the Executive is "sensitized to the importance of the environment".

"It is a sign that the Government is aware of the importance of the environment, therefore, we must encourage and put more pressure so that those destroying the environment are held accountable", she pointed out, quoted by Angop.

The person in charge – speaking this Thursday, where she participated in a guided tour, alongside Ana Paula de Carvalho, Minister of the Environment – also took the opportunity to remember that mangroves play the role of nursery for marine species, protect the seafront from erosion and floods, etc.

Miguel Xavier, director of the National Institute of Biodiversity and Conservation, said that the entity deals more with crimes linked to fauna and flora, adding that "at the level of all areas of the environment there are laws that create mechanisms to condemn those who degrade the environment, in the case of poaching, or destroy the ecosystem".

Among other aspects, he mentioned that, for this year, the Ministry of the Environment has a program relating to the preservation of mangroves in the country, whose objective is to recover areas in a state of degradation.

"In the case of Lobito, it is necessary to requalify to restructure the existing population and in Soyo, which already has a healthy population, there is a project to create a new conservation area", said the person in charge, quoted by Angop.

According to a note from Otchiva, to which VerAngola had access, on Thursday, the Minister of the Environment went to the Lobito wetlands to observe the flamingos, whose visit took place within the scope of the Ministry's Consultative Council, ongoing in Benguela.
