Fernanda Renée elected World Ambassador for Wetlands by the UN

Fernanda Renée was elected world ambassador for wetlands by the United Nations (UN). About the choice, the environmentalist says it is a joy and “a great honor”.

According to the Public Television of Angola (TPA), this is the first time that the UN appoints a figure at this level.

Speaking to TPA, Fernanda Renée said it was a "great honor", but also a challenge and a "very big responsibility".

"It's a lot of joy, a great honor and it's a challenge, it's a very big responsibility for all of us, not just for me Fernanda Renée, but for Angola in particular", said Fernanda Renée to TPA.

The environmentalist also said that they managed to "inspire" the President of the Republic and that the presence of João Lourenço in the mangroves "resulted in reducing the destruction" of this ecosystem.

"We were able to inspire the highest representative of the Nation, the President of the Republic, that, certainly, his presence here in the mangroves resulted in a reduction in destruction, the pressure that these ecosystems faced reduced a lot, and because it alerted predatory investors who mainly used the mangrove areas for the construction of their homes, tourist projects and other infrastructure that degrade the mangroves", said the environmentalist, quoted by TPA.

It should be noted that Fernanda Renée – adviser to the President of the Republic and mentor of the Otchiva project, aimed at preserving mangroves – was, last year, elected Young Champion of Wetland Conservation.
