REA may stop importing corn this year

The Strategic Food Reserve (REA) may say 'goodbye' to corn imports this year. The information was advanced by Eduardo Machado, coordinator of the REA, who pointed out this year as the likely deadline for the reserve to no longer need to import this cereal.

:

According to the official, if the reserve's promotion program produces 240,000 tons, the reserve will no longer need to import corn.

"This year, in principle, if the reserve's promotion program produces 240,000 tonnes, the reserve will not need to import corn," he said, quoted by Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA).

The REA coordinator also said that if they have 240,000 tons of maize produced "only under the program plus what the national production supply can generate" they do not need to import maize.

"This does not mean that the other operators, because our market probably has a demand above three million tons of maize, between feed and other applications, probably, but what I am saying is that the reserve stock, which we like to put it at around 520 thousand metric tons, if we have 240 thousand tons of corn produced under the program alone plus what the national production supply can generate, we don't need to import corn", he said, quoted by RNA.
