President of the Republic reopens maternity hospital in Lubango and promises “dignified assistance” to populations

The President of the Republic reopened this Wednesday the Maternidade Irene Neto, in Huíla province, paralyzed since 2018 for rehabilitation works budgeted at 10 million dollars, guaranteeing “dignified assistance” to the country's populations.

For João Lourenço, the reopened infrastructure in the city of Lubango, Huíla province, where he visited, will benefit not only the local population, "but also the southern part of the country, especially women".

Speaking to journalists, after taking a guided tour of the maternity ward, which has two floors, 120 beds and various specialized services, the President stressed that the unit was reopened "on a special day for women", International Women's Day.

Asked about the need to install oncology services at the Hospital Central do Lubango, João Lourenço promised the construction of regional oncology hospitals, noting that Luanda, the country's capital, "will gain a large oncology hospital".

"We cannot do everything at once, the executive is going to start the construction of a large oncological hospital in Luanda, therefore oncological hospitals in other parts of the country will be in a second moment", he said.

"What we can take as a given, practically taken for granted, is the construction of this large oncological hospital in the city of Luanda, probably due to the costs of an oncological hospital we will not put one in each province, what should happen is the construction of oncological hospitals regions", he stressed.

The rehabilitation works at Maternidade Irene Neto were financed by Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Limited, a subsidiary of Chevron.

Regarding the water supply project for the province of Huíla, from the Cunene river, the head of state said that his executive is in the process of mobilizing funding for building a system that responds to present and future demand.

"We are not going to say exactly when (it will be built), we just want to continue to ensure that the issue of water for Huíla, in particular for the city of Lubango, is one of our concerns", he stressed.

The executive is in the "funding mobilization phase and at any moment the works will start", he said, noting that "the city is growing, the population has increased considerably, and for this reason the demand for water is increasingly growing".

"We intend to build a system here not only thinking about the present, but thinking about the growth trend of Lubango's population", he noted.

The President's agenda in Huíla province also includes a visit to the construction work on the Lubango ring road.

About the national road that connects the provinces of Huíla, Benguela, Cunene and goes to the neighboring Republic of Zambia, João Lourenço assured that it will be rehabilitated.

"The current situation has created great constraints for everyone, hence our decision to rehabilitate this section that we consider important, in fact, all national roads are important", concluded the President.
