Frente Patriótica Unida calls for extension of deadline for voter registration

The leaders of the Frente Patriótica Unida (FPU) expressed their concern this Wednesday with the significant number of citizens yet to register for this year's general elections, one day before the end of this process, calling for an extension of the deadline.

The exhortation was expressed in a declaration signed by the president of the União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA), Adalberto Costa Júnior, by the president of the Bloco Democráticoc (BD), Filomeno Vieira Lopes, and by Abel Chivukuvuku, creator of the political project PRA-JÁ Servir Angola, the three at the head of the FPU political platform.

In this sense, they also called for the increase of the Public Service Desk (BUAP) in the municipalities, communes and its deployment in mobile subunits for the villages, reaching the humble citizens and without means of locomotion.

Expanding and complementing the BUAP network outside the country, namely in the United States of America, Switzerland and in other countries not yet covered, as well as providing mobile units with means of transport adequate to the difficulties of locomotion (traction cars and helicopters) are some of the proposals.

Angola will hold its fifth general elections in the first half of August this year, with the unofficial electoral registration process taking place since September 2021 in Angola, and abroad since January.

Adalberto Costa Júnior told the press that 24 hours before the deadline, the flooding in the electoral registration centers is public, as well as the non-existence of registration in multiple countries where the Angolan community is present.

"So, who is responsible for this non-registration of Angolans until the end of the deadlines? Who did not provide the technical and human means for it to be carried out within the deadlines", he said.

According to Adalberto Costa Júnior, the process "did not begin with the fullness of his abilities".

"And why is the enhancement of the means of registration only left until the end and this was not done from the first moment? They were options of the guardianship. Registration is an obligation and not an option, it is a reminder that I make, registration is mandatory by law, and the executive does not violate the law, at his option, because it did not provide adequate human resources or adequate technical resources", he stressed.

"And, therefore, our position is that no Angolan should be excluded from a right and the executive must find deadlines that allow it to fulfill its responsibilities and not violate the Constitution of Angola," he added.

In the statement, FPU leaders also expressed concern about the coverage by state media of initiatives by opposition political parties, institutions that "were captured and placed at the exclusive service of the regime."

"In fact, TPA [Public Television of Angola], RNA [Rádio Nacional de Angola] and Jornal de Angola, traditional State bodies, plus other private bodies, now nationalized, such as TV Zimbo, TV Palanca, ZAP and the newspaper O País, promote, only and only, the image of the regime against the nation, they ruthlessly censor all other competitors, civil society and some churches", he refers.

In the document, the leaders of the FPU underline that the state media, which should be at the service of the entire people, have become the main vehicle for instability and against national reconciliation, through the "demonization" of opponents.

"This practice, which began before the proclamation of national independence in 1975, has been continued and emphasized during electoral periods", they maintain.

On this topic, Abel Chivukuvuku said that they are not only critical, but have also warned of the situation.

"With these alerts, what we hoped is that TPA, TV Zimbo and other bodies could see and be able to say: we are going to correct the behavior", he said, noting that the problem does not arise at the level of individual journalists, because "it is the nature of the regime".

"Of exclusion, demonization and, to a certain extent, retraction of these democratic values. It is not the journalists, it is necessary to create a dichotomy about this, it is the nature of the regime", he stressed.

The president of the BD said that when the meeting requested to the President of the Republic takes place at the beginning of this month, one of the aspects to be addressed is the role of public media.

"Public opinion is increasingly massive in this regard, namely the opinion of the church, are ways of convincing the executive to free the public media for everyone, because that is the only way to make democracy. we will always use alternative means, so that we can make our voices reach public opinion", he said.

In the declaration, the FPU leaders deplored "the continuous interference, instrumentalization and blackmail carried out by the regime, creating uncertainties in the nation and abroad, in a process that is intended to be impartial and credible", via the Constitutional Court in the internal life of the parties, for example, the cancellation of the XIII ordinary UNITA congress, held in November 2019.

"The FPU is a platform integrated by these political forces and members of civil society, which aims to lead something new, which transmits faith, hope, serenity and predictability to Angolans regarding the future", underlined Chivukuvuku, at the press conference.

"This is what in the coming months we will try to clarify to all citizens, to make a bet that changes the course and destiny of our lives and of our country. This is the Frente Patriótica Unida", he underlined.
