Country plans first marine conservation area

The Minister of State for the Social Area, Carolina Cerqueira, revealed this Monday that the country is planning the creation of the first marine conservation area.

According to Jornal de Angola, the minister, speaking about biodiversity, said that the country is implementing the Strategy and Action Plan that made it possible to increase conservation areas from six percent in 2011 to double (12 percent cent), but also to create new conservation areas, including the first for marine conservation.

Speaking at the 5th United Nations Environment Assembly – which will take place in Nairobi until Friday, March 4th –, the minister considered that the event is taking place at a time when the planet is facing a triple environmental crisis, alluding to to climate change, biodiversity and pollution.

In her speech, the minister also highlighted the National Development Plan, which includes acts aimed at overcoming environmental crises, and stressed "the role of multilateralism, which is why Angola is bound by most Multilateral Agreements in the field of the environment".

Carolina Cerqueira also recalled that the country recently approved the National Strategy for climate action, which recognizes the actions to be adapted taking into account the effects of climate change, among others, writes Jornal de Angola.

In her intervention, the minister also defended the creation of an intergovernmental committee, authorized to negotiate a legal instrument that meets the principles of the Rio Declaration.
