João Baptista Borges: Angola will not be affected by the energy crisis caused by the current armed conflict

The Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, said that Angola's energy reserves will not be affected by the current armed conflict, explaining that the country currently has an energy surplus, as it is producing more energy than it consumes.

:

Cited by Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA), the official explained that the country has an installed capacity of around 6,000 megawatts, but that consumption does not exceed 2,000.

"In terms of energy, we currently have a surplus, we produce more energy, only in terms of capacity we have 6000 megawatts installed and our consumption does not go beyond the two, so we have about 4000 megawatts of both thermal and hydroelectric reserve," he said.

However, in the eyes of the holder of the Energy and Water portfolio, there is still a lack of a national electricity network that connects all the provinces of the country: "Our problem currently is the lack of a national electricity network that interconnects all the provinces of the country".

João Baptista Borges also spoke about the fact that climate change affects energy production.

"Climate change, which in fact makes it rain less and so it is necessary to introduce other sources so that with solar energy we can, when necessary, use less water to produce energy and, therefore, we can have our reservoirs more filled ", he indicated.

Cited by RNA, the minister gave the example of Portugal and Brazil that are already feeling some impacts of climate change in this sector, explaining that Angola wants to try to introduce other sources of energy to balance the matrix: "See what is happening for example now in Portugal with the drought, they have empty dams and some of them have stopped working, Brazil is also going through a similar situation and what we want is to avoid reaching that situation, so we are introducing solar energy as an energy source which will allow us to diversify our matrix".

João Baptista Borges also spoke about natural gas, indicating that this is "another great source".

"Natural gas is another great source, we still don't have enough natural gas to guarantee energy production according to our needs, but we already use some at the Soyo combined cycle plant and depending on the gas exploration that will take place in the country soon, we will certainly invest in natural gas", he considered, quoted by RNA.
