Portuguese Commission rejects vote of condolence for deaths in demonstration in the village of Cafunfo

The parliamentary committee on Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities rejected a vote of condolence for the deaths that occurred at a demonstration in Cafunfo, in the province of Lunda-Norte, deputies present at the meeting confirmed to Lusa.

:

The vote of regret, proposed by the CDS-PP, whose vote had already been postponed several times, counted on Tuesday's meeting with the votes against PS, PSD and PCP, while members of the Left Bloc were no longer in the room, confirmed to Lusa socialist and social-democratic parliamentarians.

Lusa tried to get a comment from the parliamentary leader of the CDS-PP, Telmo Correia, but this has not been possible so far.

The mining village of Cafunfo, municipality of Cuango, eastern Angola, focused the attention of authorities and members of civil society following the 30 January incidents, which the authorities considered an "act of rebellion" and others describe as "peaceful demonstration" .

Local citizens and other elements of society lament the "weak" socio-economic condition, with negative effects on families, in that region rich in mining resources, a fact that has motivated "demands for better living conditions".

According to the police, around 300 people linked to the Portuguese Protectorate Movement Lunda Tchokwe (MPPLT), which has been defending the autonomy of the region for years, tried to invade, in the early hours of January 30, a police station in Cafunfo, and in defense, the order and security forces fatally hit six people.

The police version is contradicted by MPPLT leaders, opposition political parties and local civil society who speak of more than a dozen deaths in an attempted demonstration.
