A locust plague, originating in the neighboring Republic of Namibia, has already destroyed more than five hectares of grain in Dirico municipality, Cuando Cubango province, south-east of the country, the local administration announced.

According to Dirico administrator, Cassela, the authorities are helpless to fight the plague, including vehicles.

Speaking to the radio, the official said they are using sprays, but given the extent of the zone, the effects are negligible.

"Not if you can spray a hectare, is negligible, and with the lack of vehicles to be able to move around more," he said.

The plague, are affected families from four villages who saw destroyed five hectares of plantations, the equivalent of five football fields, corn, sorghum and millet.

A swarm of locusts head towards the village of Licua, municipality of Mavinga, where a few months ago the insects destroyed 20 hectares of vegetables and cereals in areas along the rivers.

Other municipalities in the province of Kuando Kubango have been equally affected by plagues of locusts, and in particular Rivungo that in October last year recorded the phenomenon, from the Republic of neighboring Zambia, and caused the destruction of corn fields and vegetable fields in riparian zones.
