Bishops warn that repatriation of capital must not fall into revenge

The bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST) defended that the process of repatriation of Angolan capital, an urgent and necessary process, "should not fall into the revenge that can give rise to hatred".

:

The position appears in the final communiqué of the 1st Annual Plenary of CEAST, which took place from the 3rd to the 9th of March, in the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Muxima, on the outskirts of Luanda.

“The repatriation of capital illegally taken out of the country, being an urgent and necessary process, must not fall into the revenge that can give rise to hatred, but must be a process of justice and forgiveness and be a path that helps to consolidate the peace and forcing those targeted to return resources to the country”, say Catholic bishops.

In a press conference, CEAST spokesman Belmiro Chissengueti said that the bishops call attention to two aspects, namely the consolidation of peace, "which is necessary" and "an important element", and making what was taken illegally from the country to return.

"Therefore, what we are calling attention to is that there is no such selective process, which may show a certain revenge directed towards A or B", said the bishop of Cabinda.

According to the CEAST spokesman, it is important to give the opportunity for those who have money abroad to bring it back and invest in the country, assuming the responsibilities inherent in this process.

“But it is necessary to give more time, more opportunities. What do we care about screaming so much and having nothing? After all this time, what is the effective balance of the repatriation of capital, how much has it come back?”, he asked.

Belmiro Chissengueti also asked if the repatriation figures released by the Government, between four and five million dollars, are only related to the recovered sovereign wealth fund.

“But what is it that really came back? Maybe little or nothing, we also want to know how much is back”, he added.

According to the prelate, it is common ground that if one continues to follow “the path of repatriation with selective and non-comprehensive requirements, which does not take into account the issue of the conservation of peace, its preservation and also of national unity”, the The process can “slip into a cycle of hatred, which will be endless, because the cycles of power are limited”.

“This current State administration, will stay five years, possibly 10 years, with the next elections, but we have a very big future for Angola. If we enter the spiral of selective persecution, we will never have peace in conditions”, he stressed.

For the CEAST spokesman, through “a more comprehensive reconciliation, which allows what was taken to be brought, even with a patriotic feeling of wanting the good of Angola, it will be much better”.

The Bishop of Cabinda stressed the need to preserve and guarantee employability and the existence of a vision of the nation, of contextual honesty, of reconciliation, which “does not exempt the responsibility to bring back what was unlawfully taken, thus contributing for the development of the country, for the creation of jobs and not to run the risk of destroying jobs”.

“What do we want after all? We want companies to close, to increase the number of unemployed, to increase hunger and misery, or we want to guarantee employability and that employability is guaranteed in some way by those who are the main targets”, he stressed.

Belmiro Chissengueti reiterated: “It is also necessary to take into account that we are often moved by accusations, but we do not look at the real data that this produces in people's real lives, employment is scarce and courageous measures must be found to guarantee the increase and not decrease”.

For this Tuesday, an audience of the President of Angola, João Lourenço, is scheduled for the bishops of CEAST.
