Mozambican MFA says SADC will adopt "more serious measures" to minimize impact of Covid-19

Southern African countries will take more serious measures to minimize the economic and social impact of the outbreak of Covid-19 in the region, announced this Wednesday the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique.

:

"The countries of the region are taking strategies so that this situation does not catch us in the wrong direction, and as we learn of new developments, we will take other, more serious measures," said Verónica Macamo.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique spoke moments after the opening session of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Ministers, a meeting that was made by videoconference, as part of the prevention measures to Covid-19, caused by the new coronavirus.

Verónica Macamo said Covid-19 was among the main topics of the meeting and assured that regional governments are in permanent contact to monitor the evolution of the disease.

"It is clear that in SADC we have to look at the prevention component in particular," said the head of Mozambican diplomacy, without, however, advancing what specific measures the countries will take.

In addition to Portuguese-speaking countries Angola and Mozambique, SADC also includes South Africa, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Essuatíni, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Seychelles.

More than 30 African countries have reported cases of Covid-19, with more than 400 confirmed cases on the continent, mainly in Egypt, the Maghreb and South Africa, a country bordering Mozambique, according to EXX Africa.
