Cholera spreads to Cabinda, increasing to 4,582 cases and 163 deaths

Cholera in the country has spread to 11 provinces, with 110 new cases detected in the last 24 hours, including two in Cabinda, for the first time, now totaling 4,582 cases and 163 deaths.

Of the 110 most recent cases of cholera, 55 were recorded in the province of Luanda, 39 in the province of Bengo, 12 in the province of Icolo and Bengo, two in the province of Malanje and two in the province of Cabinda.

In the last 24 hours, five deaths were also recorded: three in Luanda, one in Cabinda and one in Bengo, with 148 people hospitalized with cholera.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, a cumulative total of 4582 cases have been reported, of which 2207 were in Luanda province, 1750 in Bengo province, 550 in Icolo e Bengo province, 28 in Cuanza Sul province, 23 in Malanje province, eight in Huambo province, six in Huíla province, five in Zaire province, two in Cuanza Norte province, two in Cabinda province and one in Cunene province, with people aged between 2 and 100 years.

There have been 163 deaths since the beginning of the outbreak, with Bengo province having recorded the most deaths (71), followed by Luanda (67) and Icolo e Bengo (19).

The most affected age group is the 2-5 age group, with 706 cases and 25 deaths, followed by the 10-14 age group, with 577 cases and nine deaths.

The cholera outbreak was reported on 7 January and since the beginning of February more than 100 new cases have been reported per day.

More than 925,000 people have been vaccinated against cholera, covering 86 per cent of the target population.
