Angola surpasses 4000 cases of cholera. Disease has already killed 147 people

Angola has registered 110 more cases of cholera and six deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 4,107 and deaths to 147 since the outbreak began on January 7, authorities said.

Among the 110 most recent cases, 47 were registered in Bengo province, 45 in Luanda province, 15 in Icolo and Bengo province, two in Cuanza Sul province and one in Huambo province, according to the latest epidemiological bulletin from the Ministry of Health (Minsa), released on Sunday night.

In the last 24 hours, six deaths were recorded: three in Bengo province, two in Luanda province and one in Icolo and Bengo province, with 171 people hospitalized with cholera.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, a cumulative total of 4107 cases have been reported, with 1966 in Luanda province, 1586 in Bengo province, 493 in Icolo and Bengo province, 27 in Cuanza Sul province, 14 in Malanje province, seven in Huambo province, six in Huíla province, five in Zaire province, two in Cuanza Norte province and one in Cunene province, with ages ranging from 2 to 100 years.

The deaths occurred in Bengo (66), Luanda (59), Icolo and Bengo (18), Cuanza Sul (2) and Malanje (2).

The most affected age group is 2 to 5 years old with 631 cases and 22 deaths, followed by the age group 10 to 14 years old with 517 cases and eight deaths.

Cholera is an infectious disease associated with poor hygiene conditions, poor sanitation and poor water quality.
